Does Freedom Really Ring?

The establishment of ghettos marked the end of freedom of movement for Jews.  Write about what freedom means to you in your life and what you think it would mean to lose it. (Echoes and Reflections)

Freedom means many things to me. It means that I have a say in what I can and want to do. It means that there are options for myself and my family. I would be so sad if my freedom was taken away because a freedomless life gives you no choices and no say in anything that happens to you. I feel bad for the victims of the Holocaust because they truly didn’t have a say in anything that happened to them after 1939 when the first Polish ghetto was established (Holocaust Timeline, Mrs. Stans.). Their freedom of going to store, sitting on public benches, and getting to go places till a certain time was taken away because of someone not liking that particular group of people. Whereas, our freedom is always instilled into our country and its people because that is how we live. Our freedom will always be here to stay and never be able to be taken away from us. The ghettos marked the end to freedom because it meant that they didn't have anymore options for anything or guarantee that they would ever see their family all together again. In the United States of America we have people that fight everyday to make sure that we stay free and united. During the Holocaust there were no people fighting for others to be free within the ghettos that they were summoned to. They were able to stay united as a family but they still had to go through many struggles to stay like that. As more and more ghettos opened up to force the Jewish people out of Nazi occupied countries, the freedom for them got less and less.

  1. I agree with you that the more freedoms taken away would make it harder for someone to fight back. There are still countries that take away peoples rights. It is so brave of some who try to speak out when it could cost them their life. I look forward in reading more of what you are learning and how it effects your attitude and how others that are studying this project and how they treat others.

  2. I agree with you that the more freedoms taken away makes it harder to speak up for the rights you should have. There are countries today that are treating their people the same way. It's great that there are people brave enough to try to speak out for their rights. I hope what you are learning will help you in your future.

    1. I hope that what I have learned will teach me that if I see something bad that is happening to a group of people, I try my best to speak out.

  3. I agree with you about life with out freedom is like no life at all. We need to have our freedom otherwise we would not be able to make any choices. We would have to follow others, and that's not right. Freedom is who we are and without it, were no one

    1. I like how you said, "Freedom is who we are and without it, we are no one." Really that is true. If we don't have freedom, we don't have anything because freedom is a major part of people's lives in my opinion.

  4. I agree with you that "A freedomless life gives you no choices and no say in anything that happens to you" because without freedom you basically have no say in anything whatsoever and you can't do what you want to do, only what you are told to do and what you are forced to do. Living with a freedomless life must have just been so horrible, depressing, and horrifying. Anyone who does things like this to other humans must be sick and just overall inhumane. They need to realize the pain that they have caused so many people.

    1. If they are inhumane then they probably won't ever realize the pain they cause to many people. What they did was basically forcing a fake and new life on other people.
