Prompt :
The establishment of ghettos marked the end of freedom of movement for Jews. Write about what freedom means to you in your life and what you think it would mean to lose it. (Echoes and Reflections)
From the moment Hitler took power, Jews’ rights were beginning to slowly deplete. When the Jews were taken to the ghettos, it was sort of like the Nazis were trying to take away every single last thing that the Jews would usually do on a normal basis. When the Nazis started running out of things to take away, they took away their homes, and almost all of their belongings. The Jews would first be put in a ghetto, Nazis would then make Jewish people built their own wall around the ghetto, depending on which ghetto the Jews were taken to. The Nazis had control over how much food was to be sold, and how much it would be to buy the food. Education was rare in the ghettos due to how deprived people were of money, and usually had to have the children work and support the family other than go to school. However, soon that right would be taken away from the Jews in the ghettos, as will the rest of what little freedom/rights they had left. To me, freedom means waking up in the morning and being able to go to school in a safe place. It means to come home and to be with your family, doing the things you want with them, things you enjoy, and being able to talk to your friends everyday. Freedom is important, if my freedom was being taken away from me like it was from the Jews, me being the person I am, I probably wouldn’t fight back due to fear of, well, being shunned. If I had lost my rights, my freedom, it would be very difficult to take considering that everyone is so used to having these basic freedoms in their lives. Its always been there, it would be horrible to have it taken away overnight.
